The wind howled through the trees, whipping snow into violent flurries as it twisted and turned. The mansion grounds, usually calm and quiet, had become a vast expanse of white, with snow piling against every wall and window. Rem hurried down the hallway, peering through each frost-lined window, her heart heavy with worry. Lucas had stepped outside hours ago, and with each passing minute, her unease grew.
She wrapped herself in a thick cloak and stepped out into the raging storm. Snow stung her face as she squinted into the blinding white, calling out his name, hoping to catch a glimpse of him.
“Lucas!” Her voice barely carried in the howling wind, but she refused to let it waver. She ventured deeper into the snow, feeling it claw at her, but her resolve burned hotter than the chill in the air. She would not return without him.
Finally, a dark shape emerged from the white ahead. There, half-buried in snow, was Lucas, his eyes barely open, skin pale as the frost around him. She gasped, rushing forward and dropping to her knees beside him. “Lucas,” she whispered, her voice trembling. She brushed snow from his face, feeling a spark of relief as his eyelids fluttered in response.
With one swift motion, she gathered him into her arms, wrapping her cloak around him as tightly as she could. His weak, shivering form leaned into her, and she pressed him closer, shielding him from the wind with her own body. He murmured her name softly, barely audible over the roar of the storm, and it spurred her forward.
“Hold on, Lucas,” she whispered. “I’ve got you.”
The journey back to the mansion felt endless. Rem’s own body grew numb under the relentless cold, but she tightened her hold, willing her warmth to reach him. At last, the towering walls of the mansion loomed ahead, and she rushed inside, the warmth of the entryway wrapping around them like a long-lost friend. She took him straight to the den, where she laid him on the plush couch by the empty fireplace, quickly piling every blanket she could find over him.
With a soft touch, she brushed the hair from his face, then turned and, with a wave of her hand, ignited the fireplace. The flames caught instantly, casting a warm glow around the room. Her heart pounded as she returned to his side, her hands trembling as she gently rubbed warmth back into his cold fingers.
Gradually, Lucas’s eyes fluttered open. He looked at her, his gaze hazy but filled with gratitude, and managed a weak but heartfelt “Thank you, Rem.”
Hearing those words, Rem’s own heart swelled with relief. She leaned close, her voice soft and filled with quiet emotion. “Lucas, you don’t need to thank me. But… promise me you won’t do this again. Never take such a risk alone. Please… let me protect you.”
He stared up at her, and though his face was pale, his eyes held a spark of resolve. “I promise,” he said, his voice gaining strength. “I’ll never take a risk like this alone again. Not without you.”
A single tear slipped down her cheek as she heard the vow in his voice, the weight of it settling into her heart. She brushed it away quickly, nodding and smiling softly. “Thank you, Lucas.”
Gently, she slipped her arms around him, and Lucas, though exhausted, reached up and held her close. The warmth of the fire, the soft crackling of the wood, and the blankets wrapped around them melted away the remaining chill. Rem rested her head against his shoulder, feeling the rhythm of his steady breaths, her worry finally fading into quiet peace.
“Shall we stay here tonight?” she whispered. “The fire will keep us warm.”
Lucas nodded, his eyes closing as he smiled, and they nestled together by the hearth, letting the comfort of each other’s presence ease them into sleep. The storm outside raged on, but within the glow of the fire, sheltered and together, they were safe, their bond now bound by a promise that neither of them would ever break.
